NASA Welcomes Bangladesh as Newest Artemis Accords Signatory

NASA is proud to welcome Bangladesh as the newest signatory to the Artemis Accords, marking a major step forward in international cooperation for the peaceful and sustainable exploration of space. With this move, Bangladesh becomes the 54th nation to join the growing coalition committed to responsible space activity.

The signing ceremony took place on Tuesday in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. Ashraf Uddin, Secretary of Defense, signed the accords on behalf of the country. Tracey Jacobson, Charge d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka, attended the event in person, while NASA Acting Administrator Janet Petro shared her remarks through a recorded video message.

“We are thrilled by Bangladesh’s signature of the Accords,” said Petro. “It shows the country’s dedication to shaping the future of space exploration in a way that is peaceful, sustainable, and transparent. We’re excited to collaborate, learn from each other, and see how Bangladesh’s unique talents and ideas contribute to our shared goals in space.”

Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus also expressed enthusiasm about the country’s new role on the global space stage.

“By signing the Artemis Accords, Bangladesh takes an important step in strengthening its relationship with NASA and the international space community,” he said. “This agreement sets the stage for open and responsible exploration that benefits all of humanity.”

The Artemis Accords, introduced in 2020 by the United States in partnership with NASA and the U.S. Department of State, were created to establish clear principles for civil space exploration. These include safety, transparency, the peaceful use of space, and the sharing of scientific data. The accords build upon the foundation of the Outer Space Treaty, along with other key agreements like the Rescue and Return Agreement and the Registration Convention.

What began with just eight founding nations has now grown into a broad and diverse group of over 50 countries, all working together to ensure a safe and cooperative future in space.
